What is HIFU?
High-Intensity Frequency Ultrasound (HIFU) is a minimally invasive procedure using ultrasound waves to treat a variety of conditions – both medical and aesthetic. The high-intensity and highly focused sound waves will interact with the targeted tissues in your body to either modify or destroy them completely. It is a safe and effective treatment option if you are suffering from tumours, uterine fibroids or tremors; or double chin and sagging skin.
How does HIFU work?
For medical treatments, HIFU works using beams of ultrasound to focus on the treatment area, targeting the exact tissue area. Ultrasound beams are capable of passing through layers of tissue and leaving them unharmed until it reaches the targeted area. With this highly focused energy from the ultrasound, the temperature of the targeted tissue will rise and is destroyed. This is known as ablates.
For aesthetic treatments, HIFU can precisely target the deep layers of your skin to stimulate new collagen growth and elastic production. The heat generated with HIFU can cause your skin to shrink and tighten back into an improved state for more youthful-looking skin.
Benefits of HIFU
● Minimally invasive
● Requires no surgical incisions
● Targets precise tissue in your body
● Can be used as an outpatient procedure
● Short recovery time
● Fewer side effects compared to chemotherapy, radiation therapy and open surgery
What conditions can HIFU treat?
● Eliminate double chin
● Sagging skin around the neck, under your arms, love handles, back and thighs
What results can I expect?
Individual results may vary depending on the treatment and treated area. However, you should expect a much shorter recovery time compared to more invasive forms of treatment for the same problems. Going for regular follow-ups with your doctor will give you a better idea of how well the treatment is going and if you will require more sessions. Your doctor will also advise you on what to expect and how any aftercare you will need to follow. This will all depend on your condition.
Frequently asked questions
HIFU as a medical treatment has a very low risk of complications following the procedure. However, on rare occasions, some patients have experience skin burns. With each use of HIFU, there are varying possible side effects. If you are concerned about any side effects, talk to your doctor beforehand.
Some patients have experienced slight swelling and redness immediately after their treatment. However, these will disappear on their own in a short period of time. You might also notice that the treated area will feel more sensitive compared to non-treated areas.
HIFU treatment should cause minimal discomfort, however, this is highly dependent on your skin sensitivity and pain tolerance.
For aesthetic treatment, there is no downtime and no special care is required after the procedure. Most patients who undergo HIFU treatment for aesthetic reasons return to their regular activities immediately. For medical treatments, your doctor might require you to follow an aftercare regime.
