Acne Clearance

What is acne?
Acne is the most common skin condition in Singapore, and it occurs when the hair follicles on our skin become clogged or blocked with oil, dirt, bacteria, and dead skin cells. This leads to the formation of whiteheads, blackheads, pimples (papules and pustules), or cysts, and usually affects the face, forehead, chest, upper back, and shoulders.
What Causes Acne?
As explained earlier, acne is caused when our hair follicles become blocked with oil, dirt, bacteria, and dead skin cells but there are several factors that contribute to the formation of acne, these are:

Hormones: when boys and girls go through puberty, they experience an increase in the hormone androgen, which causes oil glands (sebaceous gland) to enlarge, thus increasing the production of oil or sebum, ultimately leading to acne.

Genetics: some individuals are more prone to acne due to their genetics, if you have a family member with acne, your chance of developing acne is significantly higher.

Stress: stress stimulates the production of cortisol, a hormone which contributes to the development of acne.

Diet/medication: a diet rich in sugar and some medications, such as those that contain corticosteroids, testosterone, or lithium, have been known to cause acne.
